ABSTRACT

Women have long been associated with nature – metaphorically, as in ‘mother Earth’, for instance. There is a deep feminine connection between the Earth and women and because of women’s relationship with the environment; they can be critical agents of environmental conservation and sustainable development. Legal battles fought by visionary women leaders to protect the environment are worth noting. Environmental quality is considered as an important parameter in assessing the quality of life.Women had inherent quality to manage the resources at the basal level which helps them in environmental protection in a potential way. women’s contribution to the protection of the environment can be found all over the world in all eras. For instance Women environmentalists like Vandana Shiva, Wangari Maathai, Metha patekar, Menaka Gandhi left their foot prints in their own way in different environmental conservation aspects.The present paper covers the role of women in environmental protection, legal battles fought by women environmentalists all over the world and achievements made by women organizations are also incorporated in the paper. The recent issues like menstrual hygiene and safe disposal of sanitary napkins and new techniques for environmental protection are also discussed in this paper. The issues of innovations by women that enable them to manage the environment and how they adapt to emerging environmental challenges are the key points in this paper.
