VISIONARY KAMALA DAS AND THE IDEA OF A NEW INDIAN WOMAN

ABSTRACT

Women in spite of their half share in world population, struggle for equality and social justice in the face physical and psychological domination by men folk. Indian women though respected and venerated as Goddesses are ill treated in reality. Kamala Das through the prism of her evocative poetry reflects these emotions, sensibilities, sentiments and voices the rebellion of the modern Indian woman. This paper tries to trace the outlines of a vision for modern woman by an analysis of the poetry of Kamala Das.   The vision of Kamala Das consists of Indian woman embracing the chief tenets of independence, free spirit, economic independence and political liberty and emotional contentment. In weaving this new vision for woman through the loom of her own personal struggles and troubles, Kamala Das comes out as a Visionary Woman from the window of poetry.  Truly Kamala Das is a leader poet in heralding the new dawn for Indian woman. Here an attempt is made to appreciate the effective manner in which the nuances of contemporary Indian womanhood are reflected in the experiences of different women personae articulated through the poet’s creative imagination.
